Keep your standards exactly where they should be—HIGH!

Many years ago, an international consulting firm I was working for at the time implemented a new 360-degree evaluation system where all employees receive feedback from seniors, team members, as well as subordinates.

One of the feedback I received from my subordinates was that I was too demanding. I assigned them lots of tasks, had them redo work that was not up to the standards, and gave them lots of comments.

When I met with the partner of the company to discuss my performance, I thought I would be told to alter my management style. To my disbelief, he praised me for being demanding because it showed that I genuinely cared about the work quality and I went out of my way to guide my subordinates.

And guess what? Almost all of my subordinates went on to become high-performing employees. Tough love pays off!

The lesson I learned is to keep up my high standards and not settle for less. Otherwise, I will not attract success. I will instead be a magnet for failure.
